“Axis” is an artwork for young Canadians on ice.

An Axis is a fixed point or line around which a body rotates. It is a central part in a structure to which other parts are connected.

For so many of us, as Canadians, a well-groomed slab of ice is the point around which our communities revolve. The local arena is an intergenerational gathering place of personal growth and achievement. It’s a place where we learn to push our own limits, and propel others to exceed their expectations of self.

So with this piece, I wanted to push the limits of what we often expect from artwork in skating arenas. Instead of painting our memories of past greatness, I focused on the life and colour that our future athletes bring to these spaces each day.
