Baroque Angel Smoking 3 Cigarettes, 3D
An 83 cm tall sculpture in Calacatta Oro and Ceppo di Gre marble with brass adornments. Sculpted in zbrush, CNC milled and hand-carved/finished during the Digital Stone Project Residency in Gramolazzo, Italy, June 2023.
A Baroque Angel Smoking 3 Cigarettes, 3D is the result of an experimental creative relationship formed between artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and the humanity of an artist’s gesture. It is the first piece in a body of work titled "Fear of Angels," which draws emotional parallels between AI and images of Angels, as both (human-conceived) beings with vast knowledge and capabilities, yet with little to no free will.
This piece is a semi-satirical exploration of the discomfort attributed to generative AI algorithms in relation to human creativity and artistic labour. As the result of a continuous and imperfect dialogue between human and machine, the sculpture in marble and brass commits itself to permanence as an enduring artifact from an ephemeral time.
